work ethic and cities

work ethic is a funny thing and it is also weird how that is linked to the city... today morning i came to blr by bus from mlr.. after getting down at Navarang and took an auto.. before getting in the dude told me 150.. eventhough this was more than twice the normal i said ok.. the dude reaches me home (i get him to come by the short cuts) and the dude has the audacity to ask for 200... the nerve of the guy... this got me thinking about the work ethic in cities.. i have noticed that the guys in mumbai from the guy who polishes your shoes in the railway station to the biggest corporate honcho the work ethic is so good... they want to earn money but by working not the easy way out... i dont get to see that in a lot of other cities.. i wonder if it is because mumbai has always been a capitalist city which has always been one of the most professional places in India or is it because the rest of the cities have never been like that... mumbai has taken a long time to reach the prosperity and understands that prosperity takes a lot of hard work... the other cities have not seen the amount of hard work that goes into creating prosperity and the people there want the prosperity in the shortest time and easiest way possible....my blog seems to be more of a rant... what is the solution... i guess there needs to be more of competition that will get people to work hard...obviously the service will improve

randomness

Sitting at the new Bengaluru International airport, I am amazed at how far we as a country have come.. I am sitting here typing a blog using wireless broadband... communicating with friends spread far and wide... today i checked out the GOI website... and i came away impressed.. there used to be a time when knowledge is power.. nowadays knowledge is ubiquitous... now power is with those who use the knowledge in the smartest way possible.... we live in a more equal society than we used to......today i read about the fact that Indian Youth Congress is setting up a democratic way of electing its office bearers.. they are doing it as an experiment in Punjab and the initiative will be overseen by two former chief election commissioners.. to truly make a difference one has to join politics....
